Though no defence cooperation pact or defence contract is likely to be signed during Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s visit to France, a wide range of defence issues will be discussed.
Sources in the Indian Defence Ministry said that officials from both sides will discuss ongoing India- France defence deals worth $8.35 billion during the current visit of Indian Prime Minister.
Incidentally Defence Secretary Vijay Singh is also part of the Prime Minister’s official delegation.
Sources added that the two sides will review the progress of Mirage–200H upgradration contract, joint development of Maitri short range surface to air surface to air missile system, six multi role refuel tankers and light utility helicopters, among other issues.
France’s Dasault Aviation is currently participating in the Indian Air Force’s medium range multirole combat aircraft project.
The Indian Air Force is soon expected to award a $78 million contract to Thales of France for purchase 20 Low Level Transportable Radar (LLTR). Thales emerged as the lowest vendor against Elta of Israel and Selex of Italy in response to the global tender floated globally for the second time in 2006.
Currently India’s state-owned Mazagoan Docks Ltd. is building six Scorpene submarines under technology transfer from DCN of France.
