Global major Raytheon has been awarded an $ 82 million contract by the state-owned Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for the modernization of the Indian air navigation system.

As per the contract, Raytheon will build the ground stations for the GPS-Aided Geosynchronous Augmented Navigation System (GAGAN) and ISRO will provide the space segment and additional ground equipment.

Raytheon officials said that GAGAN will be the world’s most advanced air navigation system and will greatly improve safety, reduce congestion and enhance communications to meet India’s growing air traffic management needs.

Raytheon offers worldwide solutions for air traffic management (ATM) and has delivered satellite-based augmentation systems that have been certified for safety-of-flight operations.

India presently uses ground based terrestrial navigation system for safe navigation. Since this system has many limitations and range problems, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in 1993, endorsed a Global Satellite Navigation System as a future Air Navigation System for aviation.

GAGAN project will enable India to revolutionize its air navigation and will provide satellite-based navigation for civil aviation over Indian airspace and adjoining areas in South and East Asia.

GAGAN will address the issue of accuracy, integrity, availability and continuity which are indispensable for air navigation safety. GAGAN system is expected to be fully functional by 2013.
