In a billion dollar procurement programme, India aims to acquire 8 to10 Israeli Harop (Harpy 2) Loitering Attack Drone.
Harop drone is a vehicle launched unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) controlled by a remote operator and capable of flying more than 1,000 kilometers and loitering for hours with a 51 pound warhead.
The Harop UAV or drone is developed from the Harpy but its improvements include a longer nose, outer wing extensions and a canard foreplane.
The Harop UAV or drone specializes in the Suppression of Enemy Air Defense (SEAD) role. It features two modes of guidance to the target. One is by homing in on radio emissions with its anti-radar homing system and the other by the operator selecting static or moving targets with the UAV’s electro-optical (TV) sensor.
Using the operator mode, targets can be hit regardless of whether they emit signals or not. This line of sight capability can be used at ranges up to 150 kilometers or longer using relays built into each weapon.
Essentially, the Harop UAV is a small aircraft with a cranked delta wing and rear two bladed propeller. Its specifications include a length of 2.5 meters, a wingspan of 3.00 meters and a speed 115 miles per hour.
Harop is a long endurance drone and can remain on a mission for six hours, performing area surveillance and reconnaissance, in support of specific area suppression and denial operations.
The Harop drone can be applied to a variety of battle scenarios, including low and high-intensity conflicts, urban warfare and counter terror operations.
