The Talwar Class is a Indo-Russian joint production and the ships of this class have a number systems of Indian origin and manufacture, including their anti-submarine sensor (sonar) suite and complete communication equipment.  India contracted to buy three Talwar class frigates from Russia which were the Talwar, Trishul and Tabar class and were delivered between 2003 and 2004. The new batch of three frigates is expected by 2012.

The Talwar class frigate will be equipped with eight Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles instead of the Klub-N anti-ship missiles in the earlier Talwar class frigates. The new frigate weighs 4,000 tonnes and has a top speed of 30 knots. It is designed to accomplish a wide scale of missions, primarily, finding and eliminating enemy submarines and large surface ships.
