Indo-US military ties may soon receive another major boost since India is currently evaluating the Javelin anti-tank missile for large-scale induction. Since the process of evaluation has reached an advanced stage, a foreign military sale (FMS) is on the cards once again.
This development is a sure-sign of the growing interest that India has evinced in US military products and would ensure better bi-lateral ties between the two nations. The speculated deal for the Javelin anti-tank missile would be a multi million dollar deal. If India is convinced of the US missile and its capabilities, the deal may be executed through the FMS route without competitive international tendering and maybe even without extensive field trials.
The Indian Army has been scouting for anti-tank missiles since the homegrown ‘Nag’ missile was in the pipeline for several years and it has been given a go- ahead signal only this year after twenty years of research and trials. India was looking to purchase the Israeli anti-tank missile ‘Spike’ but since the missile failed miserably at the trial stage, the project was dropped.
Presntly, the Indian Army uses the European ‘Milan’ missiles, and the Russian ‘Konkours’ missile and they are manufactured in India under license at the state-owned Bharat Dynamics Limited. The Indian Army has ordered 443 ’Nag’ missiles and 13 missile carriers as well.
