The global aerospace and defence giant EADS has expressed its willingness to tie-up with India’s premier space agency Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and develop supersonic and hypersonic aeroplane technologies.

The Chief Technical Officer of the Franco-German company EADS, Jean Botti, said that both EADS and ISRO can forge ties to develop propulsion technology besides other areas. EADS is also looking at ISRO to build “green” aeroplanes and enter into a niche sector.

EADS’ space business entity called Astrium already has a partnership with ISRO’s commercial arm Antrix on joint building and delivery of satellites of 2 to 2.5 tonne class. Only last year, the building of W2M communication satellite for satellite operator Eutelsat under the ISRO-EADS Astrium alliance signalled their foray into the satellite-manufacturing market. While W2M was built under a $80 million contract by ISRO, officials said it was a good deal for the space agency which made a profit of $40 million in this venture.

EADS has also opened its third research and technology branch outside of Europe in Bangalore, India and it intends to take up joint projects in the areas of engineering and information technology. Added to this is the EADS Innovation Works India which will manage and broker research and technology projects for the EADS business units.

EADS officials said that they foresee India is an important part of their vision for research and technology growth and EADS Innovation Works India is part of their global Research and Technology strategy. EADS is developing international research and technology capabilities in order to access new technologies and engineering resources efficiently close to their strategic markets. EADS has also revealed that it will forge ties with the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institutes of Technology for some projects.

EADS also has the Airbus Engineering Centre India which has been operational since 2007 and currently employs 120 local engineers and is expected to grow to 400 engineers by 2012.

Recently, a proposed joint venture between EADS and Indian major Larsen & Toubro was rejected by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board because it would exceed the cap on foreign investment. EADS-L&T proposal, was to supply electronic warfare systems, avionics and radars and  was rejected as EADS did not adhere to the 26 per cent upper limit prescribed for foreign direct investment in companies in the defence sector.
