The Premier Land & Naval Systems exhibition of Asia, Def Expo 2010, where global defence players are showcasing their products and technology for the Indian Armed forces is attracting over 40,000 business visitors.
During the inauguration, Indian Defence Minister, A K Antony said that India must achieve a high level of indigenisation in defence. He added that India’s quest for self-reliance in defence underlines the importance of private sector participation, on the one hand, and in revitalising the public sector, on the other.
The Indian defence sector is a $3.1 billion market for the global defence firms. International defence firms like Raytheon, BAE Systems, Finmeccanica, Rosoboronexport State Corporation, Israeli Aerospace Industries, European Aeronautics Defence and Space Company (EADS), Boeing, Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics have placed their products and technology conspicuously at the Def Expo 2010. The Indian defence sector participation is headed by the state-owned Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) with private sector majors like Tata Group, Mahindra & Mahindra and L&T showcasing their products.
Among the major defence liaisons that took place at Def Expo, is the announcement by Indian private firm Ashok Leyland of the signing of principles of cooperation with the Paramount Group, South Africa, for the development and manufacture of mine-protected vehicles in India. The vehicles will be based on Ashok Leyland’s proven Stallion aggregates. Therefore, paving the way for the manufacture of mine-protected vehicles in India.
Meanwhile the NOVA Integrated Systems Limited, a TATA company, has joined hands with Tamam, a division of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), to evaluate opportunities to manufacture, integrate and maintain the Minipop Electro Optic system and integrate the off-the shelf ADNAV lightweight navigation system in India. Both these systems have been installed and integrated on Tata Motors’ new mine protected vehicle (MPV), by a joint Nova-Tamam team.
The joint venture firm of BAE Systems of UK and Mahindra & Mahindra, called Defence Land Systems India, also unveiled a mine protected vehicle at Def Expo 2010. The FH77 B05 towed howitzer from BAE Systems is expected to undergo army trials and will be manufactured and marketed in India by Defence Land Systems. Britain has also shown its strong presence at Def Expo 2010, with more than 20 companies participating and some exhibiting their products for the first time at Def Expo.
The European helicopter manufacturer Eurocopter showed the AS550 C3, which is participating in the ongoing trials for the reconnaissance and surveillance helicopter requirements of the Indian armed forces. The AS550 C3 FENNEC is a military combat proven helicopter and the most powerful version in the FENNEC family. Its exceptional performances have made it a worthy replacement of the Cheetah for work at high altitudes and in hot weather. The increased power and proven reliability features make it attractive for the Indian forces. Eurocopter also showcased the mock-up models of the EC 725, which is Eurocopter’s key offering for the Indian Multi-role Helicopter requirements and the Panther, which is best suited for the requirements of the Indian Coast Guard.
Russia is also asserting itself at the Def Expo 2010 with 31 organisations, including six major companies in the field of military-technical cooperation, showcasing their wares. Among the Russian companies participating are SC Russian Technologies, Rosoboronexport, the Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering and the KBP Instrument Design Bureau, who will be displaying almost 500 items, including 26 full-scale models.
