The UK based global major Rolls Royce has initiated yet another manufacturing joint venture with the state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and reinstated its continual support to the Indian aerospace industry.
Rolls Royce and HAL inked an agreement to set up a manufacturing joint venture company in Bangalore and the new entity will have a 50:50 partnership. The new entity will manufacture compressor shroud rings and the construction of a new production facility that will incorporate the latest in modern manufacturing techniques will begin this year in 2010, while component production will commence in 2012.
Rolls Royce made its mark in India many decades ago and it has partnered HAL in several key projects for India including production of Advanced Jet Trainer’s Adour Mk871 engine and production of Adour Mk811 engines for Jaguar. Although HAL became a supplier to Rolls-Royce in 2003 through exporting ring forgings for use in one of the world’s most technologically advanced civil aero engines called the ‘Trent’, the relationship between HAL and Rolls Royce goes back to the 1950s.

Rolls Royce has its presence in India through Quest Global, which is a $76 million Bangalore-based engineering services firm. Quest Global has been functioning as a dedicated engineering development centre for Rolls-Royce since 2005 and supports various aerospace engine programmes. Besides, the state-owned HAL has had a licence production partnership with Rolls Royce since the 1950s and is has been involved in the maintenance of the Avon, Adour, Gnome and Dart aero engines.
