At a seminar held in Ahmedabad on the Emerging Opportunities in Defence Sector, the Gujarat State Industries Minister Saurabh Patel indicated that a dedicated Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for defence supply industries will be set up in Gujarat.
The seminar that was held earlier this week was organised by the state industries department and the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), and dealt with the rising opportunities in the defence sector and the reforms in the Defence Procurement Policy of the Union government. The seminar also focused on Gujarat, which can be turned into a hub for offsets and joint ventures in defence manufacturing and production.
At the seminar, Minister for Industries Saurabh Patel indicated that Gujarat plans to set up a dedicated SEZ for the defence sector, that too primarily for offsets, to the ministry of defence and land in any of the special investment regions (SIR) can be allotted. Patel added that the ministry of defence will need to support Gujarat in developing the SEZ.
Meanwhile, the Gujarat government has also recently received a proposition from a private player for setting up a defence equipment manufacturing unit in South Gujarat. According to Arvind Agarwal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC), the defence equipment manufacturing unit will be set up at an investment of Rs 600 crore. However, the name of the entity was not disclosed due to security reasons.
Gujarat seems poised to cater to the national defence requirements and is kept to draw from the rising opportunities in the defence industry. The Gujarat state government feels that by having a strong base in manufacturing, it can produce quality defence equipments at cheaper prices due to low manufacturing and labour costs. Gujarat has contributed to the Indian Navy by providing crucial components.
