ISRO Builds Satellite for Indian Navy

India Defence Online, New Delhi — The state-owned Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has confirmed the fixing of the “launch window” of the dedicated communication and surveillance satellite for the Indian Navy between December 2010 and March 2011.

The Indian Defence Ministry was apprehensive about the timely execution of the dedicated naval satellite and feared that the ISRO might not adhere to the planned launch window. This was due to the recent failure of the ISRO to launch the geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle with the home-grown cryogenic engine.

However, the ISRO has allayed the fears of the defence establishment by assuring that the dedicated naval satellite will be launched as slated and that the dedicated satellites for the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force will follow. The project cost of the naval communication and surveillance satellite is around $200 million. The satellite will have around 1,000 nautical mile footprint over the Indian Ocean.

The geosynchronous satellite for the Indian Navy is the first dedicated military satellite for the country and will complement the “maritime domain awareness” as well as network centric warfare for the Indian navy. It will also ensure C4ISR (command, control, communication, computer, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) capabilities. The satellite will help the Indian Navy to network all its warships, submarines and aircraft among themselves as well as with operational centres ashore through high-speed data-links.
