BEML to Open New Aerospace Unit

India defence online – New Delhi – The state-owned Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) has taken the initiative to set-up another greenfield manufacturing plant at an investment of $70 million in Bangalore.

The greenfield manufacturing will be spread over 25 acres of land in the special economic zone (SEZ) near the Bangalore International Airport. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between the BEML management and Karnataka government for the new plant.

BEML, which specializes in heavy engineering and defence equipment, will be manufacturing aircraft components and will provide services like aircraft maintenance, repair and overhauling. The new BEML plant intends to have around 250 employees.

BEML officials indicated that the company aims at cashing in from the defence offsets policy and is expecting business of around $22 million during the two-year period ending March 2011 from the defence offsets policy.

The company has also set up an Aerospace Manufacturing Division (AMD) which will help in penetrating the aerospace component industry.

Sources added that BEML has also received certification from Center for Military Airworthiness & Certification (CEMILAC) for aero design. This will enable BEML to engage in tie-ups for aero defence offsets.

BEML is already into manufacturing various kinds of aircraft jigs like slat jigs and fuselage rotating jig, gear components for helicopters, ground support equipment and ground handling equipment including 18-tonne and 28-tonne aircraft towing tractors (ATT) and automatic weapon loaders.

Bangalore-headquartered BEML already has three manufacturing complexes in the south Indian state where heavy earth moving machinery, metro-rail rakes, rail coaches and defence trucks are also manufactured.
