India Defence Online, New Delhi –The Indian Defence Minister A K Antony announced in parliament on August 18th that the Indian Government constantly reviews the security environment and accordingly decide the induction of appropriate equipment and platforms, including submarines, for the security of our maritime interest. It will not be in the interest of national security to disclose the exact number of the submarines.
A programme for the construction of six submarines is currently underway at Mazagon Dock Limited. In addition, modernisation/upgradation with the state-of-the-art weapon and sensor-fit on the existing submarines is being undertaken to enhance their combat worthiness. The primary role of the submarines is for sea denial. There are other platforms such as Destroyers, Frigates, Corvettes, Offshore Patrol Vessels, Fast Interceptor Crafts, Aircraft and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles which are used for overall maritime security including coastal security.
