India and Israel to Build Air Defence System

India has taken a formal decision to jointly build the advance range anti ballistic missile system worth $3 billion with Israel. The air defence system will be designed and developed by IAI of Israel and the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and would be formally inked before the ruling United Progressive Alliance government goes for the general elections  before the end of their term in mid 2009.

However, this decision has upset many defence planners who argue that the $3 billion project will affect the development of the homegrown air defence system ‘Prithvi’ which is close to completion. The focus shift on the 150 kilometer range surface to air missile system will lead to a waste of resources on the ‘Prithvi’ missile whose development is underway.

In 2005, India and Israel had signed an agreement to jointly produce the Barak air missile with a range of 70 kilometres. The new extended range Barak missile system project worth $3 billion will have an extended range of 150 kilometres.

The extended range Barak air defence surface to air missile system will consist of one Acquisition radar, one Guidance radar,  one Indian command and control center and three launchers. Each launcher will have eight missiles.

On the homefront, the indigenous Prithvi Air Defence system is also being helped by Israel and has a range of 120 kilometers.   The system has already been successful for the Exopheric interception (beyond the atmosphere) and also the Endopheric test (below the earth’s atmosphere). The homegrown system has also indigenised the radar. The long range active phased array radar has been jointly developed between DRDO and Israel. The radar is the Green Pine radar which was received from Israel with the permission of the United States in 2001 and has the capability to track 200 targets at a range of about 600 kilometers.
