India Defence Online, New Delhi — As a step towards boosting up the coastal security and vigilance, the Indian Navy has decided to deploy three fast attack crafts (FACs) at base ports in Kochi and Goa. This was announced at the ceremony held in Kochi marking the arrival of the three FACs.
Out of the three FACs, INS Kalpeni would be based in its base port of Kochi, while the other two, namely INS Cankarso and INS Kondul, would depart to the Goa port in order to enhance security along the coast of Kerala and parts of the Karnataka coast. The indigenously built INS Kalpeni is expected to be commissioned in the Indian Navy in a month’s time. The highlights of these FACs include high efficiency, low maintenance, long engine life, easy installation and precise steering control.
Elaborating on the capabilities of the INS Kalpeni, the Indian Navy officials said that the ship can be used mainly for search and rescue operations, naval patrol duties, detection and destruction of fast moving craft and other targets. The INS Kalpeni is fitted with the 30 mm CRN 91 gun built by the Ordinance Factory, Medak along with light, medium and heavy machine-guns. The ship will be equipped with state-of-the-art armaments which can fire up to a range of five kilometers.
The INS Kalpeni was built at the Garden Reach Ship Builders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata. It weighs 320 tonnes and is 52 metres long. The INS Kalpeni belongs to the Car Nicobar class in the fast attack craft series and is the seventh vessel in the 10 similar ships of the same class. The INS Kalpeni, along with the other FACs, makes use of water jet propulsion technology and can achieve speed in excess of 35 knots. It has reverse osmosis technology drinking water plant and a sewerage treatment plant as well.
The captain of the ship, Lt Commander S Nathan, indicated that the high speed and high manoeuvrability of the INS Kalpeni along with its ability to stay out at sea for long durations will substantially improve India’s preparedness to deal with any coastal threat. The INS Kalpeni will have four officers and 38 sailors besides the commanding officer of the ship.
