Due to the growing threat of terrorism and the recent spate of attacks in India, Indian soldiers are being trained by expert instructors at the Counter Insurgency and Jungle Wafare School (CIJWS) in Mizoram.

Special training will be given to the Indian Army, Paramilitary and Police personnels to combat urban terrorism at CIJWS School in Variengte in Mizoram which is considered to be a world famous school with troops from various countries getting training. The US also has trained many troops of commandos at CIJWS for anti-insurgency combat and counter terrorism.

Recently, 70 Indian soldiers have completed a vigorous 14 day training on unconventional warfare at the CIJWS camp. The idea is to train soldiers who can combat any lethal situation in urban terrorist attacks. The CIJWS specializes in sub-conventional guerrilla warfare as well. CIJWS has trained over 150,000 soldiers from varied countries since its inception in 1970. It has absorbed the experiences of US and Indian soldiers who have faced terrorist attacks in Afghanistan and Jammu and Kashmir respectively.

The CIJWS training involves the soldier to become a guerrilla and be able to endure in difficult terrains by eating, sleeping and striking like a guerrilla. Another striking aspect of the CIJWS is the scientific manner in which the training is imparted. The soldiers are trained to detect Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), trained in jungle survival and interrogation techniques. There are mock operations where they are taught jungle reflexive shooting and ‘slithering’ techniques by using ropes to descend or climb.
