India Defence Online, New Delhi — The Indian Defence Ministry, along with the help of three major ports in the country, has initiated a mega project of a warship design centre in the southern state of Kerala. With a view to increase indigenisation in ship-designing and ship-building exercises, this warship design centre will significantly help the Indian Navy and achieve India’s self-sufficiency.
This mega project for warship design centre is to the tune of $113 million and the foundation stone is expected to be laid next month. Besides the Indian Defence Ministry, major shipyards like the state-run Mazagaon Dockyards Limited (MDL) and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) will also have a share in equity along with central government.
Besides the warship designing efforts, a training centre for budding professionals will also be set-up to encourage increased inputs in the local industry and help other ancillary industries by providing qualified manpower. Since only a couple of major institutions in India are teaching naval architecture which includes warship designing, there is a major need for more professionals in warship designing and building in the country.
The main local facilitator for the mega warship design centre will be Kerala industries department. According to the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC), the government agency for industrial and investment promotion in Kerala, the warship design centre will create the design and prototype of the warships which will be followed by orders given to major shipyards like MDL and GSL. The design centre is expected to be inaugurated in18 months.
Currently, India is one of the few countries which manage design departments in naval headquarters, as well as design bureaus in the shipyards that construct the warships. The Director General Naval Design (DGND) conceptualises the warship and the design departments at the shipyards convert it to a detailed design which then translates into the actual warship building exercise. However, the DGND has only about 500 designers who will be overburdened since 37 major warships are going to be inducted over the next 5-7 years. Hence, the new warship design centre will greatly help indigenisation and compliment the Indian Navy’s effort to boost its fleet.
