India Defence Online, New Delhi — The State-owned Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has taken the initiative to set-up a research and innovation centre at the premier Indian Institute of Technology (Madras) Research Park.
According to DRDO Director General V.K. Saraswat, the proposed centre at IIT Madras Research Park would focus on the manufacturing of high-grade materials, aeronautics, software development, cyber security and nano materials. The proposed centre will have a collection of scientists, academicians as well as students and the industry-institute model will help to cut costs in research projects and enable easy access of innovative products being developed.
A contract between the DRDO and IIT-Madras has been inked for the execution of the research and innovation centre project. The DRDO has taken one floor of the Research Park building at IIT-Madras and in eight months, the proposed centre will be ready.
The DRDO’s initiative to pursue this collaborative research centre at IIT-Madras will enhance the academia-industry interaction as well as creation of world-class innovative technology and products.
Collaborative research between industry and universities is a global phenomenon which enables focus on economical research and innovation due to the huge pool of scientists and academicians. The academic institute also benefits from the research centre due to its knowledge base from ongoing developments in innovative technology.
Meanwhile, the DRDO is also on the verge of opening its commercial arm due to the rising opportunities in the civilian and paramilitary sectors. While the DRDO has restricted itself to supplying equipment and technology to the Indian Armed Forces, its wide range of products will now be available to the paramilitary sector and a marketing arm of the DRDO will be established to cater to the civilian sector as well. The DRDO has already transferred defence technologies to more than 15 industrial units for civilian purposes and has earned $4.5 million from these deals.
DRDO officials said that the DRDO has also created a three tier industry interaction model based on the lead system integrator concept whereby the organisation would interact with small and medium enterprises for product development and testing and interact with major industries where the technology and the sub-systems can be integrated.
