Aero-India 2011 Starts Today in Bangalore

India Defence Online — New Delhi – India’s biennial air show called Aero-India will kick-start today in Bangalore and will witness a surge of global firms with their products and technology vying for the Indian aviation market. The Aero India 2011 aerospace exposition is being hosted by the Department of Defence Production of the Indian government from the 9th to 13th Feb 2011.The show will attract over 50 international delegations and host the participation from over 60 countries. This year, the number of global companies participating will be over 300 and the number of exhibitors is 675, including 380 from 29 countries and 295 domestic firms. Around 100 types of civilian and military aircraft will be at display in the show.

The Aero-India 2011 is the eighth air show in the country since its inception and is slated to be the largest this year and the Air Force Station in Bangalore will become the hub of aerial spectacle as well as business negotiations. While international firms will showcase aerospace products including fighter jet transport and civilian aircraft, the local firms will be targeting tie-ups as well as investments from vendors besides showcasing indigenous wares.

Major delegations from Britain, Germany, France, Russia Israel, Belgium, Brazil, Spain, Ukraine and the Netherlands and the US are looking forward for collaborations and partnerships in India. The US is the leading international delegation with over 250 members followed by Germany and Italy at the Aero-India show. As predicted, around 100 types of civilian and military aircraft would be on display at the current air show compared with 67 in the last air show. The exhibit will include fighter jets, transport aircraft and choppers and aerospace systems from national and international aerospace majors.

During the air show, India’s indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas will also be flaunted besides the Advance Light Helicopter Dhruv and the Sarang helicopter. The international fighter aircraft such as US-made F-18/A Hornet and F-16, Saab’s Gripen JAS 39, Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault’s Rafale will showcase an ensemble of aerial manoeuvres. All the above-mentioned are contenders for 126 combat jets worth $10.2 billion for India. Besides this, international vendors are also eyeing other Indian contracts for mid-air re-fueling tankers, utility helicopters, attack choppers and a fleet of trainer aircraft.

The US will be the biggest participant displaying F-16 Fighting Falcon, F/A-18 Super Hornet, C-17 Globemaster III, C-130J Hercules and KC-135 Stratotanker. India’s traditional defence partner Russia will showcase over 80 types of weaponry and will be represented by 35 companies at the Aero India 2011. Russia will highlight its MiG, Sukhoi and Almaz-Antei range, besides works from the Engineering Design Bureau. Russia will promote MiG-35 and Su-35 fighter jets, the Yak-130 combat trainer, two versions of Il-76MD transport plane (with different engines), the Il-78MK aerial tanker and MiG-29K and MiG-29KUB naval fighters. The Be-200 amphibious aircraft will most likely be one of the top attractions of the Russian exhibit due to its global popularity. Rosoboronexport and Russian helicopters will also exhibit the Mi-28NE attack helicopter, the light multi-role Ka-226T and the heavy transport Mi-26. All three helicopters are currently taking part in separate Indian helicopter tenders.

Aero-India 2011 promises to be a premier event with the latest international technologies in the field of military and civil aircraft, vital components for aircraft engines, avionics systems and sub-systems, airfield radars in the defence and aerospace sectors. The show will bring in exhibitors and other stakeholders from all around the globe under one roof to showcase the best in aviation and related technologies and products. Civil aviation has been introduced in Aero India 2011 along with Aerospace sector and comprises 55 percent participation of the exhibition.
