The lack of battle readiness of the Indian Armed Forces has become a major cause for concern since most of the weaponry and equipment with India is obsolete. The decline in acquisition and lack of modernization in the past decade has resulted in this dismal state of affairs of the Indian forces.
Although the Indian Government has taken notice of this drawback and is fast-tracking several projects and acquisition deals, the Indian forces are still grappling with redundant and inadequate weaponry in an age where lethal and sophisticated weaponry is being used globally.
The Indian Army’s 1,500 strong tank fleet does not have night vision capability which will make night time battle difficult. The tank fleet includes T-90 and T-72 with upgradation work. Also, very few infantry soldiers are equipped with night vision devices.
The Indian Army currently needs roughly 2,000 artillery guns of 155/52 mm calibre since its current stock of 153/39 mm guns are almost obsolete. No big guns have been inducted in the Indian Army since the 1986 Bofors scam.
The Army has also projected the need for 120 tracked gun and 150 ultra light howitzer guns for high altitude battle. The Army is also pushing proposals to acquire specialized weaponry like satellite based global positioning systems and state-of-art rifles. These will be procured from the U.S, Russia and Israel.
The Indian Navy has also been demanding three aircraft carriers but has received none. Meanwhile, the sole carrier INS Virat is being refit for life extension of five years. Also, there are no nuclear powered submarines with the Navy. It is still grappling with the 25 year homegrown nuclear submarines under the Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project.
The Indian Air Force also has its own woes due to delays in the howme grown Tejas Light Combat Aircraft project and the acquisition process of 126 multi role combat aircraft. Besides, there has been a decline in the strength of the fighter squadrons.
