The Indian Army has placed an order of 4,100 French origin Milan-2T Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs). The entire procurement plan of these ATGMs which is to the tune of $12 million has been cleared by the Indian Defence Ministry due to the rising tension between Indian and Pakistan.

Under this contract, state-owned Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) will manufacture Milan-2T missiles under production license from MBDA of France.

The Indian Army is gearing up its infantry battalion with stronger anti-armour capability by placing an order for the Milan-2T missile with “tandem warheads”. Milan 2T is currently manufactured by the European defense giant MBDA which is also involved in a few other defence deals with the Indian Government.

Besides this, India has already signed a contract for the acquisition of 15,000 Konkurs-M missile from Russia.

Indian Defence Ministry officials revealed that another factor that led to the current order of Milan-2T ATGMs was that the indigenous Nag ATGM is yet to be operational after two decades.

Incidentally, BDL which is the nominated production agency for Nag ATGM claims that pre-production is underway. The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) which has indigenously designed and developed the Nag missile  has also successfully completed the first phase of user trials last month and next phase is planned in mid 2009.

The Nag ATGM is a fire-and-forget third generation missile with a 4 kilometer strike range.
