Ilyushen, the Russian defence giant, has bagged the contract for the purchase of four mid-air refueling tankers by the Indian Air Force. The Russian major emerged as the lowest bidder in the race which had Airbus and Lockheed Martin.
The IAF has visualized a trans-oceanic role for its fleet by the addition of mid-air refueling tankers. This refueling will extend the reach of long-range transport and fighter jets by making them fly longer distances. The role of the fighter planes will be tremendously expanded with the onset of mid-air refueling. All major aircraft with the Indian Air Force including the Sukhoi, Mirage, MiG 27, MiG 21, MiG 29 and Jaguar are to be fitted for mid-air refueling.
The IAF floated a tender in 2007 for the purchase of four mid-air refuelers in addition to the existing six IL-78M mid-air fleet tankers procured from Uzbekistan.
