The state-owned Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has started the development of 12 futuristic systems for the home grown Main Battle Tank (MBT) ‘Arjun’. The futuristic systems will be ready in five years time.
R.Jayakumar, Associate Director of DRDO’s Combat Vehicle Research and Development (CRVDE) revealed that the futuristic systems will include automatic and auotmated target tracking, laser warning, defence aids and tank simulator systems. He added that CRVDE is speculating arobotic vehicle that will work on tele-link.
While the MBT ‘Arjun’ has proven its firing and mobility powers, the plan is to make the tank invisible in the battle-field through the development of detection avoidance and laser warning systems. CRVDE is also creating special tank simulators to enhance the capability of the MBT.
The Indian Army is expected to receive the complete delivery of the 124 MBT in the current year, according to CVRDE officials. The MBT has indigenous component amounting to 50 per cent and the CRVDE hopes to increase this amount with the likelihood of more such orders in the future. Currently, the engine and the power train is imported from Germany.
