India will be receiving the first of the three ‘Phalcon’ Airborne Early Warning & Control (AW&C) radar systems in May 2009. The Indian Air Force (IAF) will be sending a team to acquire the Phalcon radar system which has been mounted on the Russian Ilyushin-76 heavy lift transport aircraft.
India and Israel had signed a $ 1.1 billion deal for the acquisition of three Phalcon radar system in March 2004. The Phalcon radar systems have been manufactured by Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Elta Systems. Israel has confirmed tat the first of the “Eye in the sky” Phalcon radars will be delivered in May 2009, the second by late 2009 and the final by mid 2010. The delivery of these radar systems is already 18 months behind schedule.
“Phalcon’ AW&E radar systems are the most sophisticated airborne surveillance systems since its Active Electronically Scanned Array Radar allows 360 degree coverage enabling the tracking of high manouevring targets and low-flying objects hundreds of kilometers away, under all weather conditions,in both day and night.
For the Indian Air Force, this acquisition will be highly beneficial since they will be used to integrate and network with various air and ground assets through a data link. This will achieve a full circle once the dedicated Air Force satellite will be launched in 2010 in Agra, north India.
Currently, the IAF lacks such superior radar systems and platforms for tactical surveillance. The only assets with the IAF which come close to these advanced systems are the Heron and Searcher-II spy drones from Israel.
Considering the usefulness and the potential of the Phalcon radar system, the IAF is looking to acquire three more systems from Israel.
