India’s sole military aircraft manufacturer, state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) will establish a dedicated Mission and Combat System division to undertake upgrades and manufacture of avionics systems.
Presently India is largely dependent on avionics, smart weapons and communication suits from overseas sources for military aircraft and helicopters.
The new Mission and Combat System division will be housed at the Bangalore-based Design Complex and will carry out in-house R&D related to aircraft avionics projects and weapon system intigration activities.
With orders worth $8 billion in hand, HAL is undertaking aircraft upgrade projects on hand apart from development programmes such as those of the Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT), Hawk, Light Combat Aircraft, Advanced Light Helicopter, Sukhoi 30 MKI.
A senior company official said HAL is now planning to develop a new turbo-prop aircraft for Indian Air Force trainee pilots. The new aircraft will replace the existing HPT-32 Deepak basic training aircraft with the Indian Air Force.
The proposed turbo-prop aircraft will be equipped with new generation training gadgets, head-up displays, ejection seats and retractable landing gears and on-board mission computer.
The aircraft will be powered by a single-engine and will fly at a maximum speed of around 400 kilometers with a service-ceiling of 6000 meters.
