Strategic Electronics Division (SED) of Tata Power Company Limited has been awarded an order to manufacture 16 Akash missiles from state-owned Bharat Electronics Ltd.

Under the $36.5 million contract, Tata Power SED will deliver 18 launchers in 33 months time. Akash is an all weather area air defence weapon system for defending vulnerable areas against medium range air targets penetrating from low, medium and high altitudes. The system is designed to neutralize multiple aerial targets attacking from several directions simultaneously.

Rahul Chaudhry, Chief Executive Officer of Tata Power Strategic Electronics Division, said “For last four decades Tata Power SED is closely working with MoD and DRDO to provide products/solutions for the defence requirements of the country. The Akash Launcher Order further reiterates our multi-disciplinary capabilities in the defence equipment manufacturing. With increased private sector participation in Defence, Tata Power SED is gaining credibility as a long term reliable partner for the Indian Defence Forces.”

Since 1991, Tata Power SED has been engaged with the Akash Missile Program. In 2005, the division delivered the Air Force version of the Akash launcher as their first integrated design-to-manufacturing project, test firing a missile in 18 months from the date of Order placement.

Tata Power SED, a leading domestic player in the Defence Systems & Engineering space, is fast emerging as a Prime Contractor to MoD for Indigenous Defence Products. Earlier in 2006, Tata Power SED secured Orders for Pinaka Multi Barrel Rocket Launcher System from the Indian Army and Integrated Automatic Data Handling System for Air Defence from the Indian Air Force.
