INDIAN NAVY ON HUNT TO BUY 16 MULTI ROLE HELICOPTERS

The Indian Navy is on a global hunt to buy 16 helicopters for multi role purposes, as a replacement to the existing British Sea King helicopters. The multi million dollar replacement to the Sea King helicopters program is in addition to the upgrade of the British helicopters.
The Indian Navy wants that sixteen Multirole helicopters should be delivered within 46 months from the date of contract, in three phases so that six are delivered in the first batch, six in the second batch and four in the third batch.
In addition supply of eight spare engines is also sought in the tender. The helicopter must be capable of launching/ firing weapons and expendables including Anti-Ship missiles, Torpedoes, and other weapon
systems which are decided by the Indian Navy. As such the vendor will also have to undertake integration of other weaponry indicated by the Indian Navy.

The multi million dollar contract entails a 30 per cent mandatory defence offset.

The primary role of the helicopter would be for Anti Submarine Warfare, Anti Surface Warfare, while the secondary role of the helicopter will include search and rescue, cargo carrying, casualty evacuation. The India Navy requires to induct an air launched Anti Ship Missile from the Multi Role Helicopter. The Anti ship missile is expected to have advanced features, including ability for Mid Course Guidance, Terminal Guidance, Launch Capability from helicopter, Homing Head. The Indian Navy proposes to use the missiles in a configuration of two missiles per helicopter and should be capable of be being fired either singly or in salvo.

The missile should have stealth capabilities and the maximum range of the missile should not be
less than 33 kilometers. The missile should have a high subsonic speed and the missile should be capable of being launched from altitudes between 100-3000 meters or more. Besides, the missile should have advanced ECCM features, should have a homing head design and weight of the warhead should
be more than 50 kilograms.

In addition the Anti Ship Missile, the Multi Role Helicopter should be able to launch Airborne Lightweight Torpedo and should be capable of successfully targeting acoustically quiet, anechoic material coated, conventional and nuclear submarines, in intense torpedo countermeasure environment. The torpedo should have a length of 2750 to 2850 mm; diameter of 324 plus/minus 1 mm and weight of 190-310 kilograms.

Homing systems of the torpedo should have an Active, Passive, and mixed mode. The torpedo should be capable of being launched and operated successfully under operational temperatures varying from 5 degrees Celsius to plus 50 degrees Celsius.
