The Ordnance Parachute Factory (OPF), a relatively unknown parachute manufacturer is gaining credibility with its dedication towards indigenous specialization in defence production. The OPF claims to produce one of the best parachutes in the world and has recently bagged orders from Mongolia.
OPF officials indicated that the factory is dedicated to the cause of meeting parachute requirements of the Indian armed forces and it strictly maintains high quality-checks during construction of the parachutes. The aspects dealt with are the aero-foil design of the canopy, dropping load and dropping height. State-owned OPF is also working on reducing lift to drag ratios of parachutes so that less time is spent by a paratroopers adding stealth.
OPF feels that the acceptance of India is rising for specialized defence equipment and countries like Japan have elicited interest in parachutes. About 600 break-parachutes used to slow down multi-utility Sukhoi air-craft worth $0.20 million were exported to Indonesia recently. Similarly, Algeria and Malaysia have also received break parachutes used in Mig-29, Mig-23 and other Mig series aircrafts developed in parachute factory of Kanpur in India.
OPF also makes Nuclear-Biological-Chemical (NBC) suit, an all-weather stocking which has been handed over to the Army and Air Force. OPF also fulfills the requirement for clothing, leather, textile and general store items of Indian Armed Forces.
