India will finally receive its first Phalcon Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) aircraft on May 18. The ‘eye in the sky’ will enable the Indian Air Force to monitor incoming missiles and pry on neighbouring territories without air space violation. The first Phalcon AWACS has been checked by Indian Air Force officials.

The Phalcon AWACS has been running more than a year behind schedule and has cost $1.1 billion. The other aircraft will be delivered before the end of 2010 if things run as per schedule.

India and Israel are negotiating the procurement of three more Phalcon AWACS, which the Indian Air Force proposes to integrate with other air and ground assets. All the six AWACS would be linked with the country’s first military satellite proposed to be launched by mid next year.
