Due to the recent crash of a SU-30 MKI, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has sought the help of Russian experts for the inspection. As of now, IAF has grounded its fleet of frontline Sukhoi aircraft and is awaiting a clean chit form the experts.
According to sources, IAF grounded its entire fleet of approximately 55 Russian-origin SU-30s after one of the aircraft crashed last week. There have been complaints in the case of the SU-30 and structural faults in the aircraft can be a reason. However, this is the first time a crash has happened in over 12 years of an accident-free record. The crash claimed the life of Wing Commander Narah, IAF’s Directorate General of Inspections and Safety who was putting the aircraft through its annual safety checks.
The IAF operates three squadrons of the jet, some of which were bought in a fly-away condition from its Russian manufacturer while the others were manufactured under license by state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
This is the first time the IAF has grounded an entire fleet since usually a particular class of aircraft gets grounded.
