While India prepares for the initiation of the field trials of the medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) before finalizing the deal for acquiring the 126 MMRCAs, France is making attempts to be reconsidered with its Rafale fighter aircraft.

France had failed to meet the requirements of the technical evaluation even though the report of the committee is yet to be reviewed by the Defence Procurement Board. The Committee’s recommendation was based on the response of the French company.  France now feels that since the recommendation of the evaluation committee was made, the French manufacturer has provided necessary information that the Indian Air Force had sought.

The Board is likely to take up the issue of re-entry of the French aircraft in the MMRCA race, said sources. A delegation from Air International Development of France met the Defence Secretary, Mr. Vijay Singh, and other senior officials in the ministry, sources added.

The other manufacturers that had responded to India’s Request for Proposal and are contending for the MMRCA deal include Boeing’s F/A-18, Lockheed Martin’s F-16, Russian MIG-35, Eurofighter’s Typhoon and Sweden’s Saab who make the Grippen aircraft. The deal is about $10 billion.
