India is all set to invest over $2 billion on the Indian Air Force (IAF) by inviting bids for two major defence projects. The Indian Air Force is seeking 22 attack helicopters and at least 15 heavy-lift helicopters as it plans to replace its aging Russian fleet with modern weapon systems.
According to sources, Request for Proposals (RFPs) for both types of helicopters have been received by Boeing and the requirements are being reviewed. The RFP was issued two days after the new government in India was formed. In keeping with its promise to prioritise defence and modernizing the armed forces, the new government aims to spendĀ $30 billion on defence in the next five years.
It may be noted that a tender for the acquisition 22 attack helicopters was floated last year, but as bidders did not meet requirements the government cancelled the tender earlier this year.
This time, Boeing has expressed its interest in offering the Apache AH-64 and the Chinook CH-47. Boeing claims that they are the most suited and versatile machines in their class.
