The Border Security Force (BSF) of India will receive a $72 million plan for raising 29 new battalions in the next five years. This plan is a part of the expansion programme for central paramilitary forces, said BSF Director General M L Kumawat.

The BSF aims to have nine new sectors open and set up three more frontier headquarters.

Each of the battalions will comprise around 1,000 personnel and the recruitment process will start soon. With the induction of the 29 new formations, the total BSF strength will go upto 186 battalions. The BSF is also going to set up around 500 new border outposts along the Indo-Pak and Indo-Bangladesh borders. The BSF has deployed 45 battalions along the Indo-Pak border and 60 battalions along the Indo-Bangladesh border.

BSF will also receive eight helicopters and three aircraft soon for patrolling the borders and to transport men and material in case of emergencies. The helicopter will be the indigenous ‘Dhruv’ supplied by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). A transport plane and two small aircraft are slated to be procured internationally. The first helicopter will be delivered to the BSF within two months.

The current fleet of the BSF has six MI-17 helicopters and two Embraer aircraft.

The government has sanctioned $9 million for the strengthening of the BSF Air Wing by placing the orders for the helicopters and the transport aircraft.
