The current modernization drive of the Indian Armed Forces has been lucrative for private sector players who are tapping in to the $400 million worth contracts offered by the Army and Air Force.

Major players like Tata Consulting Services (TCS), WIpro and Infosys are offering their services and being sought for creating modern and efficient management systems to reduce paper work and ensure technology-driven work areas. TCS has been working on several Information Technology (IT) projects with defense forces for over a decade.

Although the Indian Armed Forces have received several bids and even appointed firms for various projects, most of them are classified.

A senior IAF official said Information Technology (IT) is a top priority and e-maintenance of assets and material management are among top projects being considered. This enables logistics maintenance and is vital for sustaining operational capabilities and material management. IT and other such integrated systems can considerably reduce time and costs and enhance productivity.

Sources indicated that two of the biggest IT projects currently underway at Indian Army and Air Force are computerised inventory control project (CICP) and integrated materials management online system (IMMOS). Business software makers SAP and IFS Defense are currently exploring an integrated Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) opportunity at these organisations. An ERP software will help IAF and army track and inventory and help in the changing dynamics of warfare. Private players like Wipro and Infosys could help in the system integration process in such projects.
