The Indian Defence Minister A.K Anthony has stated clearly in the Parliament that the Sukhoi 30 multi-role combat aircraft will gradually become the mainstay of the Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter fleet by replacing the current fleet. The SU-30 MKI is a multi-role combat aircraft which is way superior to the MiG-21 with its advanced features including mid-air refueling.
The Indian Air Force plans to induct 130 Sukhoi 30MKI fighter aircraft over the next five years which will double the fleet of the combat jet. There are currently 98 upgraded Sukhoi 30Mki aircraft in the fleet. The IAF seems pretty satisfied with the performance of the SU-30 MKI since the MiGs are not as versatile. Although a recent crash of a Sukhoi aircraft sent ripples of doubt, India will still place its bets on the Sukhoi aircraft. The findings of the latest crash are still pending and detailed inspections are being carried out on the SU-30MKI.
In the next five years, the IAF will also induct the first of its medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) for which six competing aircraft (the F-16 Super Viper, the F-18 Super Hornet, the MiG 35, the JAS 39 Gripen, the Eurofighter Typhoon and the Rafale) will undergo flight evaluation tests from this month.
