Indian Army Chief on a Six Day Visit to US Talks Regarding M777 Howitzer and Javelin Missile System Likely

India Defence Online, New Delhi – Indo-US military ties are expected to be heightened as the Indian Army Chief General VK Singh’s six-day long visit to the US is currently underway. The US visit comes two years after former Indian Army Chief had visited the country. The current Indian delegation includes the Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar.

Among the main highlights of this US visit will be a discussion regarding the procurement of 145 ultra light howitzers (ULHs) which India intends to buy from the US through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) route. It may be noted that since the infamous Bofors scam in the 1980s, Indian artillery has not seen the induction of a new gun in the last two decades. Currently, BAE Systems of US is making the M-777 ULH but the process has been disrupted again as trial reports of the howitzer were leaked prompting the Army Headquarters to order a court of inquiry.

During the current visit, the Indian Army Chief General VK Singh would also be discussing the acquisition of ten C-17 heavy lift transport aircraft and the procurement of the Javelin missile system which India plans to acquire through the FMS route as well. In addition to discussing these crucial Indo-US defence deals, the Army chief will visit important US Armed Forces establishments and meet a number of high ranking defence and civilian officials. The Indian Army Chief will also be inducted into ‘The Hall of Fame’ of the US Army War College, Carlisle since he is a pass out of the alumini. Continued…

India Conducts Interceptor Missile Test Successfully

India Defence Online, New Delhi — India has once again proven its ballistic missile defence capability with its indigenously developed interceptor missile successfully destroying a hostile target ballistic missile in the Bay of Bengal. The trial consisted of firing an interceptor missile to destroy the incoming hostile ballistic missile at an altitude of 16 kilometres.

The trial was carried out from two launch sites of the integrated test range in Chandipur off the Orissa coast to develop a full-fledged, multi-layer ballistic missile defence system. The ‘hostile’ target ballistic missile, a modified surface-to-surface ‘Prithvi’ missile, was lifted from a mobile launcher at Chandipur, 15 kilometres from Orissa. As per the reports, in a few minutes the interceptor which was an advanced air defence (AAD) missile positioned 70 kilometres across the sea from Chandipur at Wheeler Island, received signals from radars installed along the coastline and destroyed the target missile while travelling at a speed of 4.5 Mach. The AAD was a single-stage supersonic missile and the interceptor had its own mobile launcher, secure data link, independent tracking and homing capabilities and sophisticated radars. The interceptor had a specially designed directional warhead which homed-in on the target and caused maximum damage. The interceptor boasted new technologies such as directional warhead, fibre-optic gyroscopes and a radio-frequency seeker that guided the interceptor to attack the incoming enemy missile.

Both these missiles are developed by state-owned Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and this is the DRDO’s sixth interceptor mission out of which five have been successful. The current launch has enabled the perfection of interception in the endo-atmospheric zone which lies below an altitude of 50 kilometres. Earlier trials have been held in exo-atmospheric and endo-atmospheric zones. Continued…

India Defence Online, New Delhi — The Indian Air Force (IAF) has deployed a second squadron of SU-30 MKI combat fighter in the North-East region of India to further enhance its capabilities viz-a-viz China. The frontline combat fighter planes will be used for offensive and defensive purposes, according to the IAF, with the SU-30 MKI stationed in Chabua air Base, Assam. This will be the seventh SU-30 MKI squadron of the IAF to be deployed.

In order to commemorate the formal induction of the SU-30MKI for the protection of the north-east region, the combat jet carried out a fly-past. It may be noted that the first squadron SU-30 was deployed in 2009 in the Tezpur area of Assam. According to sources, repeated trespassing from the Chinese side across the Sino-Indian border has led to the deployment of the SU-30 squadron in the region. The Tezpur and Chabua districts are vulnerable areas as they lie close to the border and the frontline fighters like SU-30 are crucial to maintain security and act as a necessary deterrent. Capable of carrying nuclear weapons and tailor-made for Indian specifications, the Su-30 MKI is a variant of the Sukhoi Su-30 and is jointly-developed by Russia’s Sukhoi Corporation and India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the IAF.

The Indian Defence ministry has been taking note of the rapid development of infrastructure by China on its side of the border. The mountainous state of Arunachal Pradesh shares a 1,030 kilometre (650 miles) unfenced border with China. The India-China border along Arunachal Pradesh is separated by the McMahon Line, an imaginary border that is now known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC). While China gave up its territorial claim over the Indian state of Sikkim in 2003, it still claims that a vast stretch of Arunachal Pradesh belongs to them. According to the defence ministry, there have been about 350 violations by Chinese soldiers in the western, middle and eastern sectors of the border since 2008. Continued…
