Indian Navy to Issue $11.10 Billion Tender for Six New Submarines by Year End

India Defence Online, New Delhi — The Indian government has finally cleared Project-75 India (P-75 I) which entails the acquisition of another six submarines for the Indian Navy to plug the gap in the naval fleet. The Indian government has indicated that the tender for the same will be given by year end and the new Request of Information (RFI) is being presently processed.

At present, there are six Scorpene submarines that are being built at the state-owned Mazagon Docks in collaboration with DCNS of France. The six new submarines for the P-75I project is the next phase of the same submarine project and will be worth over $11.10 billion. According to the Indian Navy, the new submarines will differ from the earlier lot since the qualitative requirements have been altered. The new submarines will have air-independent propulsion (AIP) to enable sustenance under water for longer duration. In addition, there will be advanced detection range and combat management system besides better sensors for optimum performance. The weapon system would be a mix of torpedoes and missiles.

The six new submarines in P-75 I project will outline various critical parameters including the weight and design of the submarine. The Project 75I submarines are expected to be bigger than the 1800-ton Scorpene class being built for P-75 project. The AIP systems will enable greater underwater endurance and land-attack missiles. More General Electric Engines and Derby Missile for Tejas LCA

India Defence Online, New Delhi – After the handover of the first  ‘Tejas’ Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) to the Indian Air Force (IAF) in January, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has now made an order of 24 additional F404-GE-IN20 from General Electric Aviation. These 24 after-burning engines would power the first operational squadron of Tejas LCA. These GE 404 IN 20 will be for Tejas Mark -1 LCA only while the 99 engines which were ordered earlier were GE 414-INS6 for Tejas Mark-II.

In January, the Tejas LCA was fitted with the F-404-GE-IN20 engine on a trial basis to conduct the final flight testing evaluation. The F404-GE-IN20 is the highest rated F404 model by General Electric and includes a higher-flow fan, increased thrust, a Full Authority Digital Electronic Control (FADEC) system, single-crystal turbine blades and a variety of single-engine features. The Tejas LCA has been accorded with the initial operational clearance (IOC) earlier this year.

According to the state-run Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the indigenous Kaveri engine maybe ready for installation in 2018. The gas turbine engine Kaveri will replace the GE-404 engines which are now being put in the LCA. The Kaveri engine is a $445 million project and is being developed by one of the DRDO labs, the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE). Kaveri engine is now a joint venture formed between the DRDO and French company, Snecma, to jointly develop it to fit in the LCA. Continued…

INDIAN NAVY TO GET FOUR LANDING PLATFORM DOCKS

India Defence Online, New Delhi – The Indian Defence Ministry has released the Request for Information (RFI) for the procurement of four Landing Platform Docks (LPD) for the Indian Navy. The acquisition for the LPD is aimed at stepping up the amphibious combat capability and strategic reach of the Indian Navy.

Confirming the initiation of the procurement process, Indian Defence Ministry indicated that it will be under the ‘Buy and Make Indian’ category in which the private and public sector shipyards will need to forge alliance with foreign shipyards and partner them for the development of the LPDs.

As per the requirements of the Indian Navy, these vessels will be 200 metres long and will be able to transport Main Battle tanks (MBTs), heavy trucks, armoured personnel vehicles and other heavy machinery. It must also perform the operations of heavy-lift helicopters of the Indian Navy. The LPDs will also have a point missile defence system and a close-in weapon system to protect itself from enemy firing and aircraft. Continued…

Indian Army Receives Five ‘Dhruv’ ALH Mark III

India Defence Online, New Delhi – The Indian Army can finally boast a stronger helicopter in its fleet with an upgraded version of the ‘Dhruv’ Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) which was handed over to them recently. These new helicopters incorporate a new powerful engine which will enable take-off and landing at a high altitude with ease and help to carry operations in the mountainous terrains of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), five new ‘Dhruv’ ALH developed by them were handed over to the Indian Army. The upgraded ‘Dhruv’ ALH Mark III have a stronger ‘Shakti’ engine developed by HAL and the French firm Turbomeca. The five new helicopters will be used for varied operations in the Siachen area of Jammu and Kashmir. Since the current fleet of Chetak and Cheetah helicopters are being overworked and cannot withstand the altitude and weather posed by Siachen, the ‘Dhruv’ ALH Mark III is the need of the hour for the Indian Army.

The Dhruv ALH is a multi-role helicopter developed and manufactured by HAL and has also been exported to Nepal, Peru, Ecuador and Israel, and is on order by several other countries for both military and commercial uses. AERO-INDIA 2011 BRINGS TIE-UPS AND FOCUS ON SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES

The recently concluded Aero India 2011 has turned out to be one of the most successful air-shows of India and Asia with the unprecedented turnout of international delegations and audience and the sheer scale of the event. Aero-India 2011 was organized at Air Force Station Yelahanka, Bangalore and has witnessed an array of development in the civil and military aviation sector.

The show emerged as a premier aerospace exposition with the perfect mix of international and national representation and an ideal platform for bringing together eminent manufacturers, vendors, suppliers of the aviation industry under one roof. With 30 countries participating this year and 350 official representations from 60 countries, the delegations’ number has seen an increase three times that of the last Aero-India in 2009.

One of the main focus of Aero-India 2011 has been on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) which have for long supplied components to the defence public sector units (DPSUs). According to analysts, it is the SMEs that play the defining role in the Indian defence industry achieving the levels of vertical integration that the developed defence markets in the US and Europe already have.
