India has extended its military support to Bangladesh, by offering to help in the upgrading of the air fleet of Bangladesh Biman Bahini, the air force of Bangladesh. During his recent weeklong visit to Bangladesh, Indian Air Chief Marshal Pradeep Vasant Naik held meetings with the chief of the Bangladesh Biman Bahini, Air Marshal S.M. Ziaur Rehman to discuss this.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has decided to offer the usage of its facilities, as well as help, in the upgrading and maintenance of the fighter aircraft of the Air Force of Bangladesh. The IAF is understood to have offered to negotiate with the defence public sector company, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), to help modernise Bangladesh’s MiG-29 aircraft and Mi-17 helicopters. The IAF facilities for its Mi-17 transport helicopters, the MiG-29 and the Antonov 32, could be spared for Bangladesh Biman Bahini. Currently, Bangladesh flies three AN 32s and 14 Mi-17s. Defence ministry officials revealed that India is ready to export defence equipment, including Advanced Light Helicopters, and assist Bangladesh in warship building.
During the current visit of the Indian Air Chief Marshall to Dhaka, the goal will be to achieve improved bilateral relations, the promotion of defence ties, the earmarking of further areas of defence co-operation between the two countries and resolving pending issues which have deterred the military ties between the two nations. India increasingly wants to foster better ties with Bangladesh since it is weary of China’s support to Bangladesh. Besides the fact that China supplies artillery systems, combat aircraft along with small arms to Bangladesh, the Chinese Navy has reportedly got access to the port in Bangladesh. The increasing Chinese presence in various parts of the Indian Ocean region is being felt by India. China already has a military base on the Coco islands, leased from Myanmar, near India’s Andaman Islands. The Chinese Navy has also sent some ships to the waters off Somalia, to protect its and foreign merchant vessels from attacks by pirates.
