The Indian Army has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for the procurement of diver propulsion vehicles (DPVs) as a part of the modernisation drive. The DPVs will be acquired for the Indian Army’s commando divers.
The RFI, which was issued by the Indian Army, states that the DPV must be able to carry two fully equipped combat divers along with an additional 60 to 80 kilograms of cargo over a distance of no less than 5 nautical miles. The DPV must have a cruising speed of no less than 2-knots and it must be capable of operating up to a depth of 30 metres.
Furthermore, the Indian Army indicated that the DPV should be light weight and made of marine grade materials. The DPV should be compatible enough to be carried easily over land by two personnel over a short distance and in a vehicle over a longer distance. The DPV must also be capable of being para-dropped.
As for the combat swimmers or “Frogmen” of the Indian Army, they will pursue combat swimming or diving using the DPV. “Combat swimming” refers to surface swimming without a breathing apparatus for the purposes of coastal or ship infiltration, which is a traditional form of “frogman” activity and is thus an important feature of special operations. The common feature of a DPV is that it consists of a battery-powered electric motor, which drives a propeller. The design must ensure that the propeller is caged so that it cannot harm the diver.
