With the rising potential in the Indian defence market, the French naval shipbuilder DCNS is scouting for an Indian firm to set up a fabrication unit for the purpose of building warships and submarines for the Indian Navy. DCNS is reputed as one of the best developers of surface combatants, submarines besides critical equipment and systems that include underwater weapons and propulsion systems.
DCNS is expected to finalize its Indian tie-up within 2009 and has launched its Indian subsidiary DCNS India in Mumbai recently. Like other potential foreign players tapping the Indian defence market, DCNS hopes that the 26 per cent cap on foreign direct investment would be increased soon for greater indigenization and technology transfer.
It may be noted that DCNS has been commissioned for the transfer of technology to the Indian Navy for the construction of six Scorpene submarines for the Navy at Mazagon Dock. DCNS is also pursuing the latest bids for six new submarines that India plans to acquire in the near future.
The new DCNS subsidiary DCNS India will be conducting in-depth engineering studies and provide consultancy, sourcing and procurement services for other DCNS projects with Indian shipyards.
