India’s Tata Group And Sikorsky Aircraft Moot Helicopter Joint Venture

Two of the world’s leading industrial enterprises, the United Technologies Corporation of the U.S and the Tata Group of India, have entered into an agreement which marks the first for the manufacture of Sikorsky products in India. Private sector major Tata Group has completed an agreement with Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation for the manufacture Sikorsky S-92(R) helicopter cabins in India. The Tata Group subsidiary Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) will undertake the manufacturing of the cabins.

Sources indicated that the first cabin is scheduled for delivery in late 2010 from a new facility that TASL will construct at Hyderabad in the southern Indian state  Andhra Pradesh. TASL provides integrated solutions for aerospace, defence, homeland security and disaster management Mr. Ratan N. Tata, Chairman, Tata Group, said that the manufacture of the S-92 cabin in India is a significant first step in the growth of India as a global hub for aerospace manufacturing.

Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation is a world leader in helicopter design, manufacturing and service. The S-92 helicopter is the first helicopter in its class certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration besides the European Aviation Safety Agency. Nearly 100 S-92 helicopters have been produced and the worldwide operating fleet has accumulated more than 150,000 flight hours. The aircraft perform a variety of missions including search and rescue off the U.K. coast.
