Failing to find replacements for the Shilka Air Defense Systems, for over the last five years the Indian Army has decided to buy advanced Gun Systems to meet the Air Defence requirements on fast track basis.
With the close of bids early this month for Shilka Replacement and none of the bidders filing their bid the Indian defence Ministry gave clearance to the Indian Army’s pending request to buy Gun Systems for Air Defence needs while keeping the proposal to buy Gun Missile Systems for Shilka replacements alive to be procured at a future date.
Request for Information has been sent to defence companies in Russia, Israel, Germany, United Kingdom and France for theprocurement of the Gun Systems for air defence needs.
The Gun Systems should be able to defend ground installations against a variety of weapons including both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, precision-guided munitions and unmanned air vehicles. The Gun Systems will be used to protect the Armour and motorized units of the India Army.
The Army’s new requirements for the system include detection of targets as low as 30 meters in altitude; and ability of the gun to function in temperatures ranging from minus 40 degrees Celsius to 55 degrees Celsius,
and to be able to perform in plains and semi-desert terrain.
Sources in the Indian defence ministry said India is looking for joint tie-ups with DRDO and other overseas defence companies to build the air defence gun in India finally. Sources added that DRDO’s own effort to build an all weather air defence gun system is not producing success.
Sources in DRDO said, DRDO’s new gun will features twin-gun cyclic rate of fire of 2200 rounds per minute aimed to engage and neutralize high speed aircraft, helicopters, remote-piloted combat air vehicles and stand-off weapons. The Gun system will be all weather, day and night operated and fitted with laser finders, forward looking infra red imaging systems and other systems.
